Party Favors

Edited to Add: I just found out this morning that I got an Honorable Mention in the Papertrey Guest Star Stamper contest for these party favors! Wahoo! I'm always so excited and honored when Nichole chooses one of my creations since she is my stamping/card making hero! Be sure to check out all the honorable mentions and the winners. There were some really amazing entries!

When I was coming up with projects for the Papertrey Guest Star Stamper contest, I was really on a birthday kick! I guess it is because we're having a party this weekend. Anyway, this was another of my creations. I made these little party favors. They were super easy to make, too.

I found these paper mache boxes at my local craft store. They are 3 inches across. Perfect for party favors and they were just $1. I bet they would be cheaper at a larger chain craft store, too, but I don't have any thing like that around here. First, I painted them white with regular acrylic paint and let them dry.

After the paint was dry, I covered the edges with patterned paper from the Pink Pattern collection. I used a punch for the top of the circle cake. Then, I made holes in the tops of the cakes with a paper piercer and a file. I rolled up some of the polka dot paper to make candles and put them in the holes I made on top of the cakes. I rolled some yellow ribbon to make the flames for the candles. Then, I added some liquid applique around the candles and the edges of the cake and heated it with my heat gun to make
it puffy. I think it looks so much like decorative frosting.

They were really very quick and easy to make and I think they turned out pretty cute. I used two candles since my daughter just turned 2 yesterday, but you could easily alter the idea for weddings, too. They would look so cute with a little mini couple on top!

Have a great day!

Party Hat tutorial

Morning! One of the projects that I entered in this month's Papertrey Guest Star Stamper contest were these party hats that I made for my daughter's birthday party next weekend. When I saw the birthday set It's a Celebration, I thought it would be so much fun to come up with some type of party hat. I designed my party hats first using plain paper and then set about making all the party hats. I stamped my patterned paper using the stamp set for some of the hats and used the Pink Patterns paper for some others. I have a tutorial below to teach you how to make the party hats, but I want to share the stamped patterned paper hats first.

I love the colors aqua mist and berry sorbet together and used them on a couple of my party hat designs. For this first hat, I used the present and bow stamps from It's a Celebration to make my patterned paper.

I used berry sorbet and aqua mist again on this party hat design. For this hat, I used the cupcake stamps from It's a Celebration.

I also needed a couple boy party hats. So, I used the party hat and topper from It's a Celebration and aqua mist and water lily green ink to make this design.

This is the last design that I created with stamping. I used the Boxes, Bags, and Tags stamp set with berry sorbet and sweet blush ink.

Party Hat Tutorial
Okay, now for the tutorial. These party hats are really easy to make, especially after you've made the first one.
Supplies
12x12 cardstock or patterned paper
ribbon
1/8 inch circle punch
3/4 inch circle punch
double sided tape
scissors
ruler
pencil
something to make a large circle (I used a lid)
stamps and ink if you plan to stamp your patterned paper

First, draw a large circle on a piece of 12x12 cardstock. If you are using a patterned paper, draw the circle on the back of the paper. I used the largest pan lid I could find in my kitchen and traced around it to make my circles.

Cut the circle out. Then, divide your circle into quarters. I used my glass mat to center the circle and that made finding the center lines easier. (Mine is even quarters, but the photo seems to be at a strange angle.) If you are stamping your patterned paper, now is when you want to stamp the other side (on the side with no pencil lines).

Cut your circle in half. You will have two party hats from each circle. You can set one aside for now.

Use a 3/4 inch punch to cut a semi circle out of the center of your hat (this is why we marked the circle both ways before).

Put a piece of double sided tape on one side of the semi circle. I'm not sure if you can see it well in this photo, but there is double sided tape on the right side.

Tape the hat together by overlapping the taped side over the other side.

Now, punch an 1/8 inch hole on both sides of the party hat about a 1/2 inch up. Make sure the seam where you taped you hat together is in the back.

Cut two pieces of ribbon 18 inches long. Knot the ends like this. I double knotted mine just to make sure they were larger than the holes.

Thread one ribbon through each hole in your party hat Now, you will be able to tie the hat when it comes time to wear them. Eighteen inches seems really long, but 12 inches was not near long enough for my 2 and 4 year olds. (They were my guinea pigs when designing the hats. )

Now, cut three pieces of ribbon 4 inches long. Arrange them crossed over like this.

Then, fold them in half.

Tape the end like this to make your tassel.

Thread the tassel up through the inside of the party hat.

Once you have the tassel pulled through, trim the ends of your ribbon.

Now, you have a finished party hat. The process goes very quickly once you have made the first one. If you do each step at the same time for multiple hats, you will have lots of hats in very little time.

I made two each of these six designs. The thing that took the longest time was stamping the 4 different patterned papers for the 4 designs I created. The patterned paper hats were easy to make very quickly.

If you make a party hat, I would love to see it! Please let me know!

Challenge Friday

It's time for another challenge over at the Hanna Stamps forum on SCS. This week's challenge is to make a shaped card. Any shape except a rectangle or a square. Be sure to use the code HSC12 when you upload your photo to the SCS gallery. You can see all the creations here.

When I first say Garden Riley, I knew I wanted to make a house shaped card for him to be gardening in front of. I created the template for my house first and then made it into a card. I cut strips for the siding of my house and sponged the edges with soft sky ink to give them more dimension and make them stand out. When I was adding them to my house, I overlapped the bottom edges over the top edges to make them stick out slightly at the bottom just like siding. Then, I cut out a square for the window. I added a piece of acetate behind to make it a window. Then, I added the trim and chimney.

Next, I stamped Garden Riley and the trees from Tis the Season Hanna. I colored them with copic markers and cut them out. I also cut some grass from wild wasabi cardstock. I used dimensional adhesive when I added the trees, Riley, and the grass to my card to make them all stand out from the house.

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with for this challenge!!

Hello Riley

Quick post today. The kids are going to their great grandparents' house today so Mommy can have some "mommy time." I plan to edit photos so that I can mail them off to shutterfly. I haven't done it since September. Yikes! Pitiful for a scrapbooker, I know. And I take a ton of photos, so it's going to take me awhile.

I made this card a while back and haven't shared it yet. I just love Riley, but of course, you already know that. I started out by stamping my image and coloring him with copic markers. I added a line to make shirt and pants for Riley. I chose some My Mind's Eye patterned paper. I matted my image and sewed around the edges. I ran my card base through the swiss dots cuttlebug embossing folder. Then, I added my patterned paper and ribbon. I stamped my sentiment and then added my image with dimensional adhesive. Last, I added some dew drops.

Hello Riley

How was your weekend? Ours was pretty much the same old same old. My husband is working out of town and couldn't come home this weekend so it was just the kids and I. We did go visit my Mom Sunday afternoon, but other than that we didn't do much. I've been working on Papertrey Guest Star Stamper projects. So, I have a card to share with you that I made last month. I love this little Garden Riley!
For some reason, I don't use orange a lot on cards, but I love how this card turned out. I made my card base from orange DCWV cardstock and then embossed the top of it using the cuttlebug swiss dots embossing folder. Since the cardstock has a white center, I lightly sanded the dots to give them more dimension and stand out a little more. The, I stamped Riley and colored him with copics. I matted my image and sewed around the edge. I had chosen a patterned paper from My Mind's Eye with some orange flowers on it. I matted my patterned paper with white cardstock and sewed around the edges. I added the patterned paper and image panel to my card base. I used some orange ribbon from my stash as an accent. I stamped the sentiment on white cardstock and punch it out. I added my sentiment, flower, and button as the finishing touches.
